Stena Recycling aims to set a new standard in battery recycling
Stena Recycling strengthens the team for safe and sustainable logistics of electric vehicle batteries. With the launch of their pilot project at Ausenfjellet in Norway for the reuse and recycling of EV batteries, the company is bolstering its team with qualified expertise.
Marcus Martinsson, Product Area Manager for Batteries at Stena Recycling, explains that they identified early on the need for industrial-level competence and experience to establish robust logistics systems. “What we’re doing is far more complex than just transporting a used EV battery from point A to point B,” he says. “We prioritize safety first, then focus on aspects such as transport, packaging, and storage capacity – all with the lowest possible carbon footprint. To achieve this cost-effectively and efficiently, having the best people on the team is crucial.”
Joining the team is John Asak, hired as the Logistics Development Manager. Asak brings with him 16 years of experience from Bring, where he led business development and collaborated with large industrial players. He was responsible for logistics arrangements for Freyr and Stena, among others. This appointment underscores Stena’s focus on the safe and sustainable handling of used EV batteries – a complex process requiring careful planning and execution to ensure both safety and efficiency. “I knew John Asak from before and knew he was a strong candidate, capable of handling this task,” emphasizes Martinsson.

Inspired to contribute
John Asak is both proud and happy to contribute to Stena’s EV battery initiative. The shift to electrification has led to high demand for critical and limited resources like cobalt and lithium. “It’s important to find a way to recycle and reuse these valuable resources so they can be used again and again. It’s inspiring to work in a company that takes responsibility and does something about it,” he says.
Thorough preparation
Asak emphasizes the complexity of transporting and managing logistics for both used EV batteries and production scrap from lithium-ion batteries. “We are operating in a pioneering field where expertise, regulations, and capacity are still developing. We need to be innovative to enhance safety and efficiency. It’s about thorough preparation, reliable systems, and ensuring that the entire process – from battery collection to finished recycled raw materials – is safe and efficient,” he continues.
John Asak’s responsibilities extend far beyond Norway’s borders. He will drive business development and establish logistics systems and routines for battery operations across the entire Stena Recycling Group.
With this reinforcement in the team, Stena Recycling is well-positioned to ensure that the transition to a greener future is not only as safe and sustainable as possible but also efficient.
